Broken Hearted

It’s a rite-of-passage to get skinned knees and bruised elbows.

My toddler is constantly requesting bandages (we use the heavy duty kine in our house). Our bodies are designed to easily heal these skinned knees without medical intervention. A bandage and some ointment typically do the trick. But sometimes, we get so wrecked that we need a doctor to stitch us up, a serious transplant or perform major surgery. I’ve been there!!!

The same process can happen with our spiritual hearts and mind. No doubt, that as we go through life our internal “emotional heart” gets some scrapes and bruises. Some heart-hits heal with the passing of time, a shift in perspective, positive thinking, or a good talk with a friend. But what happens when we experience a deeper cut or a serious assault? What happens when typical, happy go lucky thinking, leaves us empty and unsatisfied? What happens when that unseen, mysterious, and secret place inside us gets badly damaged by rejection, years of repeated pain, seasons of neglect, disappointment or (fill in the blank) without spiritual healing?

We need the Great Physician!

Psalm 147:3-5 declares,

“3 He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars;
he gives to all of them their names.
5Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is beyond measure.”

Jesus came to earth for just this mission! He came to heal the sick and the brokenhearted, to set us free from all sin. He came to be our savior and to make us whole again by his beautiful grace and mercy. He understands our pain.

I love that we can entrust the fixing of our brokenness with God. He is our creator and healer. He is the ultimate burden carrier, he understands.

He is happy to shoulder our burdens for us.  All the brokenness found in our life and in this world…God can handle it! Jesus Christ carried all our burdens on the cross with him and over came all evil and pain for our sake; this we can remember as we are freed from sin, as we heal, as we are forgiven and as we forgive.

When we receive God’s healing love and unending peace, honest transformation can begin.

1 John 2:2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

Being unstoppable means we are forgiven and receive the healing and freedom God has for us.

A simple prayer:

God, Be my shepherd, heal the broken areas of my heart and mind and bind up my wounds. Help me in my un-forgiveness. May your Word guide me to the healing I need.  -in the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.    Amen
